Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialised form of orthodontic treatment that combines orthodontic braces with jaw surgery to correct severe dental and skeletal irregularities.
It is typically recommended for patients whose jaw issues cannot be resolved with braces alone, such as when the upper and lower jaws are misaligned due to developmental or congenital conditions.
This treatment involves a collaboration between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. First, the orthodontist uses braces to align the teeth in preparation for surgery. Then, the surgeon repositions the jaws to improve function, facial balance, and aesthetics. After surgery, orthodontic treatment continues to fine-tune the bite and ensure the teeth are properly aligned.
Surgical orthodontics is often used to address issues such as:
-
- Severe overbites, underbites, or crossbites
- Jaw asymmetry
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Difficulty chewing or jaw misalignment
The treatment process usually takes at least two and a half years, but depends on the complexity of the case and the need for pre- and post-surgical orthodontic care.
