Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is a specialised form of orthodontic treatment that combines orthodontic braces with jaw surgery to correct severe dental and skeletal irregularities.

It is typically recommended for patients whose jaw issues cannot be resolved with braces alone, such as when the upper and lower jaws are misaligned due to developmental or congenital conditions.

This treatment involves a collaboration between an orthodontist and an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. First, the orthodontist uses braces to align the teeth in preparation for surgery. Then, the surgeon repositions the jaws to improve function, facial balance, and aesthetics. After surgery, orthodontic treatment continues to fine-tune the bite and ensure the teeth are properly aligned.

Surgical orthodontics is often used to address issues such as:

    • Severe overbites, underbites, or crossbites
    • Jaw asymmetry
    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Difficulty chewing or jaw misalignment

The treatment process usually takes at least two and a half years, but depends on the complexity of the case and the need for pre- and post-surgical orthodontic care.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

1

Corrects Severe Jaw and Bite Issues

Surgical orthodontics can address complex skeletal and dental problems, such as severe overbites, underbites, or crossbites, that cannot be corrected with braces alone.
2

Improves Functionality

By realigning the jaws, this treatment significantly improves functions like chewing, speaking, and breathing, especially in cases of obstructive sleep apnea or jaw misalignment.
3

Enhances Facial Aesthetics

In addition to functional improvements, surgical orthodontics enhances facial symmetry and balance, often leading to an improved appearance and self-esteem.
4

Long-Term Solution

This procedure provides a permanent solution to skeletal and dental irregularities, offering long-lasting benefits by correcting both the alignment of the teeth and the underlying jaw structure.
5

Improves Jaw Health

By addressing jaw asymmetry or misalignment, surgical orthodontics helps reduce or eliminate strain on the jaw joints, potentially preventing future complications like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
6

Comprehensive Approach

Combining orthodontic care with surgery ensures that both the teeth and jaws are aligned properly, providing a holistic solution that ensures a stable bite and better overall oral health.
